A Study on a Type & Screen Order in Elective Surgery

Abstract

|
Appropriate crossmatch ordering is necessary for effective utilization of donated blood
with limited shelf life. A number of elective surgical procedures for which blood is
regularly crossmatched but rarely used have been identified. For these procedures a
"Type & Screen" has teen recommended to be ordered instead of the routine two units
preoperative crosshatch, The author observed that Type & Screen order decreased
excessive crosshatching and laboratory costs and a Type-Screen can safely supplant the
routine two units preoperative crossmatch.
